Midlife Crisis or Chronic Reinvention Syndrome?
How creating F1 content, an Olympic summer, and my husband’s passion for sports inspired me to reinvent myself yet again!
Is Chronic Reinvention Syndrome a thing?! If so, I think I have it…
Because I have this my endless need to reinvent myself. It could also just be an ability. Basically, I love learning and trying new things, following my curiosity, and exploring paths that intrigue me. Like, all the time!
One of the latest paths I’ve explored is the world of sports communication. If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have already seen my early steps into F1 content creation.
Sports have always been a part of my life. Before I fell in love with music in my teenage years, I played all sorts of sports—swimming, basketball, tennis—and I loved them all. I also watched a lot of sports with my family, but over time, that habit faded because, well, life happens. Until one very passionate Argentinean came into my life.
That would be my husband. Saying he's passionate about sports would be an understatement. On his list of priorities, football (River Plate, more specifically) comes first, and then me.
Jokes aside (but not really…), his passion for sports reignited mine. I not only started watching them again, both online and in person, but I also began creating content about them—something I never thought I’d do. And I loved it!
One thing led to another
The process of creating content made me realize that journalism can be both fascinating and enriching—not only for those who practice it but also for those who consume it. With the rise of social media, Twitch, and all sorts of new platforms, the way we communicate about sports has evolved, and I believe it's for the better.
Nowadays, anyone can try their hand at sports communication, though that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll excel at it. There’s a lot more to it, but these new mediums have opened up opportunities that simply didn’t exist before.
So, staying true to my syndrome, I’ve recently enrolled in a Master’s Degree to specialize in Sports Journalism and Communication.
Crazy, right?! Well, I thought so too, but just for a second. Then, I realized that this is the natural consequence of my reignited passion and a genuine interest in understanding the importance of journalism in communication—not just in sports.
After all, my background includes writing scripts, producing films, creating social media content, and writing articles. And all of these fields share three things: content, storytelling, and communication.
Journalism is the next step, and I know it will be fun, enrich the work I already do, and open up new opportunities along the way. So why not do it?
Reinventing myself much lately?! Nah…
This will be my sixth "reinvention" in the last three years, and I'm getting dangerously close to my 40s.
It all started when I left my career as a producer in 2021 (1st) and jumped into a completely new industry—blockchain (2nd). Once there, I decided I wanted to go solo and began my solopreneur journey (3rd). With my business, I started writing content for others (4th), then expanded to create social media content for myself, this time about Sports (5th). By doing this, I started appreciating journalism, and because I wasn’t busy enough, I decided to enroll in a Master’s Degree in Sports Journalism (6th).
See why I think I have a syndrome?! Or maybe this is just my midlife crisis.
Anyway, when I was younger, I also had many interests and wanted to explore them all. However, I felt pressured to choose just one. While I did pursue different interests, I never did so professionally until I reached my 30s because, in my mind, once you chose a career path, you had to stick with it and grow within it.
It’s no secret that societal and family pressures often shape the careers we choose. We’re taught to pick a job, stick with it, and climb the ladder. For many, especially in traditional environments, stability was the ultimate goal.
Luckily, the world is changing. Now, more people are reinventing themselves, breaking away from the career ladder, and embracing new opportunities at any stage of life—especially post-Covid. Career pivots are more common and accepted, and staying in the same profession for decades seems impossible.
I’m willing to be uncomfortable, are you?
Choosing a new direction, pursuing a different passion, and building something new is exciting—but it also comes with challenges. It requires vulnerability—being honest with yourself about what you really want. There's the fear of starting from scratch, not being taken seriously, not earning enough, or even not liking your new path.
But once you recognize that your unique experiences shape who you are, that fear can turn into excitement. And even if you have to pivot again, you'll have gained skills and experiences you wouldn’t have otherwise.
The hard part is making the decision and sticking to it. It’s easy to overthink, plan every detail, and worry about the outcome. But I’ve learned that when you follow your genuine passion, opportunities come—maybe not immediately, but they do come, often in ways you didn’t expect.
Of course, some strategy is needed—you have to think about how to leverage your existing skills in your new venture. Timing is also key. How will this change affect your life, your finances, your overall stability? These are important considerations. But at the end of the day, it’s about aligning your decisions with what truly matters to you.
More than anything, it takes courage and a willingness to be uncomfortable. But, think about it, reinventing yourself isn’t about starting from zero, it’s about building something new from the best parts of what you’ve already done.
So, dear reader, if you have that inner voice pushing you toward something new, don’t be afraid to listen to it. Whether you’re 20, 40, or 60, it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.
Until next time, be bold, be brave, and follow your interests! Life is more fun when you do.
